Coding

Coding helps us learn how to think critically, logic, and be better problem solvers. An algorithm is a set of instructions. Unplugged Coding  Create a Treasure Hunt! Start by choosing a secret location to hide a small toy. Next write out directions on how to get there. Use words like forward, backwards, left, or right. (Ex. Take 10 steps FORWARD, Take 3 steps to the LEFT, Turn RIGHT at the sidewalk). Finally, ask a family member to follow your directions  and see if they can find the treasure!

Practice your coding skills at https://blockly.games/maze. Try to complete as many levels as possible with the fewest amount of blocks.  

Reading in Your World

In the Kitchen:

•  Help write out the grocery list

•  Help bake or cook something using a recipe – using measuring tools to measure out the ingredients

Letter Writing

Write a letter to one of the characters in a story you have read recently. Maybe they did something good and you want to tell them how great it was, maybe you want to convince them to change their behavior, or maybe you have questions you want to ask them.

Using your YCSD email, write a letter to your favorite author. Let them know how you feel about their books and characters. Send the email to Mrs. Prats (kprats@ycsd.york.va.us).

Non Fiction

Read a nonfiction book or an article and create a poster of facts about the topic.

Character

Think about a book you read recently. Create trading cards for each of the books main characters'. Your cards can include the characters’ names, 3-5 words to describe them, and a picture you create of them.

Create an acrostic poem using the letters in your name and words that describe you or things you like. See the example on the left.

K-2 Go to https://www.poetry4kids.com/poems/ and take turns reading funny poems out loud as a family. You may even want to memorize one to share with others over the phone or video call.

3-5 Go to https://tinyurl.com/y7vout7t and exercise your creative mind with this activity. You can also explore the rest of the site to learn more about poetry and how to write it.  

Word Play

Write your name in big letters in the center of a piece of paper. Now use smaller writing to write words that describe you all around your name and over the rest of the paper. You can make some of the words bigger or smaller depending on how important they are to you. You can also draw pictures of things you like to do all around your name on the paper. If you have access to a thesaurus, this is a great way to find more words.

Ask your family to describe you using 3-5 words. Create a word cloud at https://tinyurl.com/yywww5rg  to display what everyone said.
